sinus rinsing
I was talking to a twitter friend about sinus rinses and I have too many thoughts to put on twitter. Here they are:
Basically every allergy medicine, decongestant, caffeine, etc., crank up my anxiety, so I am doing Singulair, which makes me a little more anxious but not I'm-about-to-die anxious, as well as a purely physical remedy: the SINUS RINSE.
I use NeilMed premixed packets and squeezy bottle; the packets turn the water into a saline that doesn't sting the way any other liquid up your nose does. (And I use distilled or 5-minute-boiled water. The squeezy bottle you wash with hot water and then microwave to steam sterilize it.)
When I do the sinus rinse I make sure I have my face tilted forward far enough that the rinse goes out the other nostril and not down my throat (I don't think anything bad happens if it does, but it feels not great). I blow my nose after I do each side and then a couple minutes after I'm done.
I usually do the rinse right before I take my shower at night, because for one the rinse makes things . . . drain, and it's convenient to be able to just spit that out. Also sometimes water goes into the nooks and crannies of your sinuses and then drains out when you tilt your head a certain way, and I'd rather that happen in the shower. I've found that I need to hold my head upside down for ten seconds or so and then straighten up to get the last of the water out. And I will also stand in the steam of the shower and tilt my head back, and that gets some things moving.
Sometimes if I'm super congested already then I can't get much or any water IN one or both nostrils. I'm not sure what the solution is here; I'd probably recommend doing whatever tends to decongest you and then trying the rinse? But I basically do the rinse every night during allergy season and it seems like that keeps my sinuses from getting that congested. And I would hope that if you're blocked then doing a rinse every night will eventually clear it up. The NeilMed box also says you can do a double-strong rinse but I haven't tried that. Maybe a super-salty solution would make my nose run the way getting ocean water in my face does?
Anyway, friend, I wish you luck in the world of breathing! I hope the sinus rinse helps.
